16 Lives Claimed in Road Accidents during New Year’s Celebration

The Traffic Police Department, Ministry of Public Security, has reported that 16 people were killed in road accidents during the four days of International New Year celebration (Dec 29, 2016 – Jan 1, 2017).

More than 140 road accidents were reported nationwide during the period which also left 225 injured and 275 vehicles damaged.

Fifty three road accidents were reported on Dec 31, killing 8 people and injuring 97.

Vientiane Capital had 36 road accidents reported, resulting in five deaths, 55 injuries and 69 vehicles being damaged.

Police officers said that road accidents doubled compared to the same period last year, even though a number of police officers were stationed at areas prone to road accidents and alcohol checkpoints were set up.

They attributed the increase in road accidents to the additional days of the celebration this year.
