Remarks With Indonesian President Joko Widodo Before Their Meeting

SECRETARY POMPEO: Thank you (inaudible). Thank you for hosting me here today. It’s wonderful to be here. The Vice President said to send his regards; he so enjoyed his trip here. And I just wanted to say thanks for being such a great, wonderful strategic partner of the United States of America. We value your democracy here. It’s one of the biggest democracies in the world. It’s something that America treasures, and so thank you so much for having me here today.

PRESIDENT WIDODO: (Via translation). Indonesia is the largest country in Southeast Asia and also the country with the largest Muslim population in the world. We are also proud that democracy is growing rapidly in Indonesia. The challenge faced by all nations today is how to maintain diversity and respect each other. Indeed, I continue to develop diversity.

MALAYSIA CONTRIBUTES US$100,000 TO LAOS DAM COLLAPSE VICTIMS

PUTRAJAYA, Malaysia Malaysia will contribute US$100,000 to Laos following the collapse of a dam that caused more than 1,400 people to be homeless and over 100 missing.

Wisma Putra (Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry) in a statement yesterday said Foreign Affairs Minister Saifuddin Abdullah conveyed this to the Laotian Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith during a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the ASEAN Ministerial Meeting in Singapore Friday.

In the spirit of ASEAN solidarity, the ministry said Malaysia hoped that the contribution would assist Lao PDR facilitate its relief efforts.

It is of utmost importance for Malaysia to offer assistance within its means and capabilities to neighbouring countries affected by natural calamities, Wisma Putra said.

The collapse of the Xe-Pien-Xe Namnoy dam in Attapeu Province following flash floods has caused vast destruction on properties and livelihood of the people in the vicinity.
