37th ASEAN Summit, related summits wrap up successfully, FM

The 37th ASEAN Summit and related summits wrapped up successfully on Nov 15 following four days of discussion under the chairmanship of Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith told a press conference on Monday.

Laos’ delegation to the 37th ASEAN Summit and related summits was led by Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith.

ASEAN leaders and their counterparts from dialogue partners approved more than 80 key documents, the highest number ever adopted in the history of all ASEAN meetings.

“During the course of the meeting, ASEAN leaders discussed several important issues, especially the implementation of ASEAN Community Vision 2025 Blueprints, particularly the progress made in the past one year under the chairmanship of Vietnam,” said Minister Saleumxay.

ASEAN leaders and their counterparts also discussed ways to strengthen cooperation for years to come which include Covid-19 response efforts, post Covid-19 recovery and the establishment of Covid-19 Asean Response Fund.

The leaders also agreed to establish Regional Reserve of Medical Supplies, and ASEAN Centre for Public Health Emergencies and Emerging Diseases.

At the meeting, the leaders of 10 ASEAN member states and five dialogue partners – China, Japan, R. Korea, Australia and New Zealand – signed the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), the world’s largest trading agreement sharing one third of the world’s GDP.
