ADB Project Improves Champassak Uni’s Education Quality

(KPL) A project to improve higher education for Champassak University has improved teaching and learning in the university.

The Strengthening Higher Education Project has provided infrastructure construction in the university campus including school buildings, library, information and communications technology (ICT) centre, dormitories, and laboratory, as well as provided modern equipment for the laboratory,’ said Vice President of Champassak University Phonesavanh Thepphasoulithone.

The project is helping improve teaching and learning for teachers and students because the project has encouraged teachers to study at the Master and PHD degrees ad local universities and abroad, which it helped improve them on teaching skills, said Dr Phonesavanh Thepphasoulithone.

The project provides teachers an opportunity to upgrade teaching skills and study on master and doctoral degrees under the ADB’s project, said Mr Somsanit Souvong, a teacher of Champassak University who benefits from Strengthening Higher Education Project.

I have learned new teaching methods to transfer knowledge to students, which in the past, we taught theories more than practices so after I have improved my teaching skills , I change the teaching practices in 40 percent and theory 60 percent, said Mr Somsanit Souvong.

Most of students are interested in laboratory. Previously, the university did not have laboratory, we were only studying by the lecture and focus on theory, but currently we focus on practice in the laboratory and it has made us more interested in studying and better understand the lessons.

ADB has provided financial assistance to help the Lao PDR improve higher education system.

The project will focus mainly on upgrading standards at the country’s universities of National University of Laos, Champassak University, and Souphanouvong University, said ADB Country Director to Laos, Mr Yasushi Negishi.

Strengthening Higher Education Project links between higher education services and socioeconomic needs by improving education quality, enhancing access to higher education programmes, and strengthening governance and management of higher education institutions.
