Agro Ministery to plant trees on 200,000 ha nationwide

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has set an ambitious plan to have tree seedlings planted on 200,000 ha nationwide including 160,000 ha for commercial purposes and 40,000 ha for water source and natural protection.

The ministry also plans to have 1.8 million ha of deforested area rehabilitated nationwide in celebrating the 41st anniversary of the National Arbour Day, and the International Children’s Day – Jun 1.

“We have designated the coming National Arbour Day and the International Children Day as a beginning day for organizing forest-related activities to raise awareness among young prioneers and young generations and the entire society of the importance of forest, sustainable protection, development and use of forest resources,” Minister Phet Phomphiphak said on May 19.

Forest cover in the Lao PDR currently stands at around 62% of land area.

In order to translate into reality the resolution of the 11th National Congress of the Lao People’s Revolutionary Party, the resolution of the 6th Party Cell of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry and the 9th five-year National Socio-economic Development Plan of the government, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry has issued an order urging its affiliated departments, local administrations, entrepreneurs and people across the country to attach attention to promoting tree plantation and reforestation of natural forest areas.

Earlier this year, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry issued an order urging increased participation in fighting forest fires, and tree sapling cultivation and reforestation.

The order resulted in significant reduction in forest fire incidents, according to the Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Phet Phomphiphak.
