ASEAN Members Strengthen Cooperation On Social Protection

(KPL) ASEAN members have enhanced cooperation on social protection of people, especially vulnerable children, a meeting has been told.

The 14th ASEAN GO-NGO Forum on Social Welfare under theme Strengthening Social Protection for Vulnerable Children In ASEAN was held in Vientiane Capital on Nov 18.

The forum has brought together representatives of the ASEAN member states, non-government organizations, civil society organizations, UN agencies, development partners and other stakeholders to discuss how social protection can be made transformative to realize the rights of every child in ASEAN, reflect the opportunities and challenges.

We are gathering together in order to enhance the appreciation and understanding of participants on promotion and protection of the rights of children through the lens of vulnerabilities in addition to revisiting all progresses and indentifying challenges in the implementation of regional framework and action plan to implement the ASEAN Declaration on Strengthening Social Protection in the context of child protection for vulnerable children, said Ms Ninpaseuth Xayaphonesy, Director General, Department of Lao Women Development, Lao Women ‘s Union.

As we are all aware that there are many vulnerable people not yet fully protected from risks in some of ASEAN Member States including the Lao PDR such as unemployed youth, vulnerable children, persons with disabilities, elderly persons, victims of disasters, said Mr Vongkham Phanthanuvong, Deputy Director of Social Welfare Department, Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare.

ASEAN member states have intensified efforts to develop, improve social protection floors – the first level of social protection in a national social protection system – and progressively achieved greater by having and implementing the nationally appropriate and sustainable social protection systems and measures for all including floors to ensure those vulnerable groups are fully protected and improved their living standard.
