China To Adopt Measures Promoting Higher-level Opening-up

(KPL) The 2nd China International Import Expo (CIIE) was officially launched today at the National Exhibition and Convention Center, Shanghai, China with Chinese President Xi pledging China will adopt five measures to promote higher-level opening up.

He said China will continue to expand market opening up, continue to optimize the framework of opening up, continue to improve business environment, continue to deepen multilateral and bilateral cooperation, and continue to jointly build the Belt and Road.

China has made major progress in expanding imports to promote consumption and cutting tariffs as part of the country’s efforts to further open up its market, Xi Jinping told the event also attended by French President Emmanuel Macron, Jamaican premier Andrew Holness, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic.

The Lao delegation to the event, being held from Nov 5-10, was led by Minister of Industry and Commerce Khemmani Pholsena.

The Chinese president urged resolute opposition to protectionism and unilateralism in a bid to jointly build a world economy of openness and cooperation, and called on countries to oppose knowledge blockade to avoid widening technological divide.

He proposed a continuous reduction of trade barriers and further improvement of global value and supply chains to jointly nurture market demand.

He put forward three proposals for economic globalization: Jointly building an open and cooperative world economy; Jointly building an open and innovative world economy; Jointly building an open and sharing world economy.

He called for efforts to uphold the core values and basic principles of the multilateral trading regime and promote trade and investment liberalization and facilitation.

China will pay more attention to the role of import and continue to open up its market. Steps will be taken to further cut tariffs and institutional costs, nurture a batch of innovative demonstration zones for import facilitation, and expand the import of high-quality products and services from other countries, Xi pledged.

Being held on the sidelines of the event include National Exhibition, Business Exhibition, and Hongquiao International Economic Forum and other activities to promote mutual cooperation on trade in goods-services, culture exchange.

CIIE 2019 also drew more than 4,300 journalists and representatives of more than 3,000 companies from 150 countries around the world.

The 1st China International Import Expo (CIIE) was held in 2018 on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. The expo focused on China’s great accomplishments in the new era, and promoted the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
