Covid-19 outbreak may derail education targets

The second wave of Covid-19 in the Lao PDR has been affecting public and private schools, and forced them to have temporary closure and if the outbreak prolongs, scheduled examination may be affected, said a report.

The Ministry of Education and Sports said in its report on May 5 that the implementation of the annual Education and Sports Development plan for 2021, budget plan and planned projects of the education and sport sector may fail to reach targets set, and some subjects may not be taught especially in remote areas where distance learning is not widely accessible.

Some 36 people, including two teachers, 12 pupils and 20 students (one foreign student), of public and private schools have tested positive to Covid-19.

Across the country, some 1,177 people have been confirmed positive to Covid-19 since the first case was reported in March 2020. This includes 1,076 active cases and 101 recoveries.
