The annual Elephant Festival, the 11th of its kind, opened on Feb 18 in Xayaboury district, Xayaboury Province in the presence of Prime Minister Thongloun Sisoulith and his spouse.
Thousands of domestic and foreign visitors and local residents also attended the festival.
Elephant Festival 2017, scheduled for Feb 17-19, featured several activities including a 68-elephant parade, shows by tame elephants, elephant baci ceremonies, cultural performances, a trade fair of domestic and imported products, elephant rides for sightseeing, tea preparations, elephant conservation advocacy activities, alms giving and a healthy elephant contest, among others.
“The festival is organized to draw the public’s attention to the condition of the endangered elephant and to promote traditional culture and livelihoods,” said Deputy Governor of Xayaboury Province Yanyong Sipaseuth.
