Chaired by Vice Governor of Xayaboury Phetphixay Sounvilay, the meeting agreed that the annual event will be held as usual but the number of its attendees will be minimized in compliance with the measures of the National Taskforce Committee for COVID-19 Prevention and Control.
The planned one-day event will also feature an alms giving ceremony to allow people to make merit for deceased elephants along with a parade of 21 elephants around Xayaboury town, an elephant baci (a ritual usually held on auspicious occasions or after encountering an accident), an elephant buffet (a buffet for elephants) and a trade exhibition of locally-made products.
Vice Governor Phetphixay said “this year Elephant Festival will be held as a small event to preserve the time-honor tradition. Today discussion is tentative as whether this event will be held or not will be decided by the government and we will hold a press conference to update the public on this.
