Health Minister Urges Public Participation In Anti-dengue Efforts

(KPL) Minister of Health Bounkong Sihavong has urged general public members to join anti dengue efforts as the disease has claimed 27 lives in six out of 18 provinces and infected almost 12,000 people nationwide.

Ten fatalities from dengue have been reported in Savannakhet, six in Vientiane Capital, five in Champassak, three in Saravan, two in Khammuan and one in Borikhamxay.

It is necessary to have public cooperation to decrease the population of mosquito larvae that will become mosquitoes, then dengue vectors, said Dr Bounkong. Mosquitoes can transmit the disease by biting an infected person and bite a non-infected person, starting transmission cycle for the dengue virus.

Four different types of dengue virus (DENV 1 to 4) have been known to cause dengue hemorrhagic fever.

Human deaths from dengue are relatively high because people, especially those in remote areas, tend to treat themselves before seeing doctors, the minister said. General public members are advised not to buy medicines to take when they are sick but should go to hospitals.
