Laos Plans to Grow Trees on 20,000 ha This Year

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry targets to plant tree saplings over 20,000 hectares to restore forest coverage to 70 percent by 2020.

Currently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry (MoAF) in cooperation with each District Agriculture and Forestry Divisions has a plan to prepare over 20 million saplings to plant for the coming National Arbour Day and Children’s Day, according to the Director of Agriculture and Forestry Department, Mr Sousath Xayakhoumman.

The ministry and each District Agriculture and Forestry Division also went to encourage thepublic and private plant nurseries to support the planting of young trees.

Vientiane Capital has a plan to prepare over 500,000 seedlings to be grown on 300 hectares, according to Mr Sousath.

In recent years, Vientiane Capital has planted more than 2.7 million seedlings on almost 400 hectares, with an estimated90 percent survival rate. Most of the treeshave been planted along both sides of 450s Road, he said.

The trees included rosewood, teak, eucalyptus, rubber, fruit trees and ornamental trees.
