The Ministry of Education and Sports has included English as one of the subjects in the final examinations for year 4 lower secondary (Matthayom 4) students this academic year 2016-2017.
The objective is to test the knowledge and ability of lower secondary final year students, because English is a significant tool for communication around the world, the Director of Secondary Education Department, Ms Sysouk Vongvichit said in an interview last month.
Ms Sysouk also explained that the Lao PDR has already been integrated into the ASEAN Economic Community, so its educational system and quality must be brought on par with other ASEAN member countries.
The inclusion of the English subject in examinations will also help raise students’ confidence in using English to communicate with foreigners and help them build their communication skills.
The year 4 lower secondary English exams will be tried out this year, along with a similar exam for the final year upper secondary school students.
The exit examination will fall in June and the subjects include Lao language-literature, social science, mathematics, biology, civil instruction and English.
