The government of Luxembourg has granted 6.5 million Euros for the implementation of the health project for mothers and children phase II for 2017-2020 in three provinces of Bolikhamxay, Savannakhet and Bokeo in Laos.
The handover ceremony for the grant aid was attended by the Minister of Health, Dr Bounkong Sihavong and Director for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid at the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, Martine Schommer and relevant officials of both sides.
For the first phase in 2011-2015, the Luxembourg government provided 8.1 million Euros to improve the health of women and children living in remote areas in eighteen districts in five provinces – Phongsaly, Luang Namtha, Luang Prabang, Oudomxay and Savannakhet. They were selected to receive the support based on criteria such as the prevailing high rate of diseases and stunting among children, and low utilization of existing health facilities.
The project is the result of cooperation between the Laos Ministry of Health, UNICEF, UNFPA and WHO.
