Malaysia Committed To Enhance Education Cooperation With Laos

Malaysia is committed to enhance cooperation with the Lao PDR on education, youth and sports.

The statement was made by Ambassador of Malaysia to the Lao PDR Mohd Aini Atan when he paid a courtesy call to Minister of Education and Sports Sengdeuane Lachanthaboun in Vientiane on Friday, 10 August 2018.

The ambassador was accompanied by Mr. Johan Arief Jaafar, First Secretary of the Malaysian Embassy in Vientiane.

Mr. Mohd Aini reaffirmed that education and capacity building programmes continue to be one of the main pillars of cooperation between both countries. Several hundreds of undergraduate students are interested to study in Malaysia each year. The number of the students from Laos is expected to increase as there are more than 100 well known private and public universities in Malaysia.

Education Malaysia in collaboration with the Embassy of Malaysia in Vientiane is going to organize an education fair tentatively on 8 September 2018 to further promote education between Malaysia and Laos, according to Mr. Mohd Aini.

Mr. Mohd Aini also noted the successful cooperation between the Nottingham University Campus based in Malaysia and local organizations on establishing the Nottingham University in Laos.

In September 1980, the government of Malaysia introduced the Malaysian Technical Cooperation Programme (MTCP), an initiative of sharing experiences and expertise in various fields including education cooperation with MTCP recipient countries.

In the Lao PDR itself, more than 2,000 officials have benefited through various programmes since its inception.

In addition, Mr. Mohd Aini encouraged Lao PDR students to apply for MTCP-ASEAN Scholarship Programme, who wishes to pursue their postgraduate studies in Master and PhD at Malaysian Universities for the year 2019.
