NA Vice President attends ASEAN-AIPA Leaders’ Interface Meeting

Between May 10-11, Vice President of the National Assembly Sounthone Xayachak and a delegation attended the ASEAN-AIPA Leaders’ Interface Meeting in Labuan Bajo, Indonesia.

The ASEAN-AIPA Interface, which takes place during the ASEAN Summit, serves as a crucial platform for dialogue and cooperation between ASEAN Leaders and Member Parliaments of ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA).

During the meeting, state leaders, prime ministers, parliamentary leaders, and their respective delegations from ASEAN member states, ASEAN Secretary General and AIPA Secretary General discussed several key issues of common concern and challenges of achieving ASEAN Community building.

AIPA leaders highly valued economic growth and the maintenance of peace, stability and security in ASEAN over the past years as situation in the region and the world continue to develop in a complicated manner. They also emphasized the strong coordination between ASEAN administration and legislative bodies in strengthening potential to bring about prosperity for ASEAN people.

They urged ASEAN leaders to continue to maintain peace, unity and ASEAN centrality; strengthen energy supply and food security in ASEAN; promote green investment, equity and financial sustainability; and improve action plans, legal frameworks and policy to achieve ASEAN Green Initiative and agreements.

The ASEAN leaders were also asked to improve the effectiveness of ASEAN mechanisms, promote innovation, use and development of science and technology, and narrow development gap among ASEAN members.

The Lao parliamentary delegation also had unofficial meetings with delegations from Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand and AIPA Secretary General to discuss cooperation and mutual support for years to come.
