Almost 100 officials representing organisations under the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism on Jun 1 planted over 150 trees to mark National Arbour Day and International Children’s Day.

We are holding a tree planting event today to ensure that Laos is a green and charming country. The trees will provide cooling shade and a green environment, said Vansy Kaomao, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Information, Culture and Tourism.
Trees arecrucial for all living things and economic development. Since 1975, the party and government have observed tree planting not only to celebrate National Arbour Day and International Children’s Day but also to help achieve the government’s plan of having 70 percent of the national territory covered with trees by 2020, said President of Khamphay Sana Group, Khamphai Somsana.
I have been taking part in tree planting for almost 30 years. Every year, we provide tree saplings to government organisations to plant on National Arbour Day, he said.
This year, Oudomxay province asked Khamphay Sana Group to provide them with 1, 500 tree saplings, including rosewood ( known in Lao as may kha young), and Pterocarpusmacrocarpus (locally known as may dou) for planting on Arbour Day.
