The Prime Minister’s Office has stated in its announcement that public offices at central and provincial levels are prohibited from organizing festive parties during the celebration of Pi Mai Lao or Lao New Year B.E 2565.
Pi Mai Lao is celebrated annually between April 14 and 16. Since this year the 16th April falls on Saturday, the government has designated April 13 as a substitute holiday for Pi Mai Lao celebration.
The notice, dated 23 Mar 2022, also advises the celebration to be organized in a thrifty manner.
Central and provincial Covid-19 taskforces were also urged to translate the Prime Minister’s notice into detailed instructions to ensure relevant authorities comply with anti-Covid-19 restrictions during Pi Mai.
Laos has logged 2,819 new cases of Covid-19 over the past 24 hours, the highest ever recorded on a single day basis since the first case was detected in late March 2020.
The new infections were detected among 7,010 samples tested for Covid-19 nationwide.
These included 2,776 domestic infections and 43 imported cases with most of the domestic transmissions detected in Vientiane with 1,084, Savannakhet 388, Vientiane (province) 228, Xayaboury 240, Xieng Khuang 145, Khammuan 139 and Oudomxay 87.
The total caseload of Covid-19 in the Lao PDR has reached 161,866 including 652 deaths.
