(KPL) Singapore Ambassador to Laos, Ms Leow Siu Lin hosted a reception party to mark the 54th anniversary of Singapore’s National Day and the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Singapore and Laos in Vientiane on Friday, Oct 11.

Minister of Foreign Affairs Saleumxay Kommasith, Minister of Health Bounkong Sihavong, representatives of diplomatic corps and relevant officials attended the event held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel Vientiane.

We commemorate Singapore’s bicentennial, which marks the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the British in Singapore, key turning point in our history and development. This set our nation on the path leading to where we are today. Singapore is a young nation, having celebrated its 54th National Day in August, Ambassador Leow Siu Lin told the event.

This year also marks the 45th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Singapore and Laos. Singapore and Laos enjoy a longstanding friendship. Bilateral relations are excellent and marked by cooperation in various fields, said Ambassador Leow Siu Lin.

Each year, around 600 to 700 students, youths and volunteer groups from Singapore visit Laos to participate in community service projects and exchange programmes. Many of Singaporean students travel to the provinces to undertake volunteer projects such as constructing schools and community halls.

Meanwhile, under the Singapore Cooperation Programme, nearly 14,000 Lao officials have received training since 1992 in a range of areas including English language training, public governance and administration and trade facilitations, among others.

Training takes place either in Singapore or at recently upgraded Laos-Singapore Cooperation Center in Vientiane.

Singapore also continues to supports Laos’ development goals through capacity building and sharing of development experience.

45th years ago, on Dec 2, 1974, Laos and Singapore signed an agreement on the establishment of diplomatic relations which was considered as historic milestone in our friendship and cooperation that fully responded to the aspiration of our two nations, said Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith.

Looking through 45 years of relations, we have witnessed that our two countries have deepened our friendship and cooperation at various levels, both government to government and people to people. Our leaders, heads of states and governments, as well as high level government representatives have exchanged numbers of visits, which today have become more frequent both in size and substance. This has contributed to deepening our mutual understanding, trust and confidence between our leaders and governments as well as between the Lao and Singaporean, said Mr. Saleumxay Kommasith.
