The Lao People’s Democratic Republic and the United Nation Development Programme have increased cooperation towards reaching the country’s Sustainable Development Goals.
The Prime Minister, Mr Thongloun Sisoulith, met the United Nations Development Programme Administrator and Chair of the United Nations Development Group, Ms
Helen Clark, in Vientiane Capital on Mar 13.
PM Thongloun Sisoultih appreciated the UNDP Chief upon her working visit to Laos and her contributions to socio-economic development and poverty reduction in the Lao PDR, especially through project development worth over US$ 100 million.
The UNDP will provide approximately US$ 103 million for socio-economic development and poverty reduction in the Lao PDR in 2017-2021.
In response, Ms Helen Clark thanked PM Thongloun for the warm welcome extended to her and her delegation and briefed the host of the objectives of her working visit to Laos.
During her visit, the Administrator met with the President of National Assembly, Pany Yathortou, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Saleumxay Kommasith, and senior officials of development partners to commend the progress made so far by the Lao PDR towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals since her last visit during the 12th High Level Round Table Meeting in November 2015.
The Administrator also launched three flagship UNDP programmes with the Ministry of Planning and Investment, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare under the new UNDP Country Programme for the Lao PDR (2017-2021).
