Vice Premier urges Xekong to turn Covid-19 crisis into an opportunity for improving tourism infrastructure

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Planning and Investment Sonexay Siphandone has urged Xekong Province to turn Covid-19 crisis into an opportunity for improving tourism infrastructure and promoting commercial production of local people.

“So far, the government has issued notices urging the people to exploit Covid-19 crisis as an opportunity to improve tourism infrastructure in line with the theme “Laos visit Laos” to make tourist destinations well-known and diversify tourist activities thus attracting more visitors,” the vice premier told senior officials of the province on Jan 24.

The deputy prime minister also urged local authorities to promote commercial production according to the potential in each locality to promote employment and income generation of local people as the exports of the province are normally outpaced by imports.

He urged local authorities to encourage local people to use locally-made products, improve the standard and quality of their products, and form producers’ groups to ensure sustainable production.

Last year, Xekong Province recorded the total exports of US$21.49 million, mainly dominated by agricultural products including cassava flour, sugar, organic coffee, vegetable, meat and fish.

The figure represented only 83.29% of the annual export target the province set for 2020.
