Ministry Orders Telcos to Maintain Old Connection Fees

The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications has suspended the agreement No 1075/PT signed on March 13, 2017 on the determination of telephone and internet charges and sales promotion principles and ordered telecommunications companies to continue to observe their previous internet charge policy until their internet service quality is improved.

The Ministry of Post and Telecommunications and relevant sectors are expected to discuss the possible downward adjustment of the internet charge.

At the meeting on the improvement of internet quality and service charges which was convened in Vientiane on April 5, the ministry asked the internet providers to deliberate on their preferred frequencies and submit chosen frequencies to the ministry for approval as the ministry wants to make sure that quality internet networks cover all parts of the country.

The Deputy Minister of Post and Telecommunications, Mr Bounsaleumxay Khennavong, told telecommunications and internet companies to place importance on improving the quality of internet services to meet the required standards and address public complaints about expensive but substandard services.

The ministry has appointed a committee to monitor and inspect the improvement measures carried out by the telecommunications companies and warned that proper measures will be taken if they failed to do anything to ensure that users are provided quality service at reasonable prices.

At the meeting, the telecommunications companies presented their service quality improvement plans, especially for nationwide expansion of high speed 4G internet, along with obstacles faced in improving service quality, including outdated transmission lines, inadequate frequencies and high payment for internet signals from foreign companies.
